Lupus

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect any party of the body, though most often affects skin, joints, bloods cells and kidneys. More rarely, it may affect lungs, blood vessels and cause clotting. SLE is separate from the condition of cutaneous lupus, differentiated by the involvement of organs other than the skin.

Causes of Lupus

Unfortunately, the cause for SLE is not known. There is an interplay of genetics, environmental and hormonal factors.

Are you experiencing any of the above symptoms?

Diagnosis of Lupus

The diagnosis of SLE can be quite challenging, as the symptoms can be very similar to that of a number of other conditions. It is a commonly misdiagnosed condition, and unfortunately there is no single or combination of tests that can diagnose it. The diagnosis is based on a combination of symptoms, clinical examination, blood tests, and relies on an expert Rheumatologist opinion.

Treatment Options for Lupus

The management of SLE can be quite varied depending on the severity of the disease. Lifestyle measures are very important, and include protection from sun exposure and avoidance of smoking.

Medications are often required to best manage the symptoms and ensure good health. These include DMARDS, corticosteroids, and other immune modulating therapies.
