Ankylosing Spondylitis
AS is an inflammatory condition typically affecting the lower back – Sacroiliac joints and lumbar spine, and can also affect the neck. AS mostly affects the spine, though it can also in some cases affect other joints such as the hips, knees and feet. Some people get additional symptoms including eye inflammation, and an inflammatory bowel condition.
Causes of Ankylosing Spondylitis
Currently, the cause of AS is unknown. There are factors that may contribute to risk, the most important being that of Family history and genetics (The HLA-B27 gene). Although this gene is nearly always present in people with AS, it is also very common in the healthy population, and the presence of this gene does not mean you will develop AS.
Are you experiencing any of the above symptoms?

Treatment Options for Ankylosing Spondylitis
The primary treatment for AS is non-pharmaceutical. Daily stretching is one of the most important measures. Gentle exercise at least 3 times per week also improves outcomes.
Regarding medication:
- Simple analgesics such as paracetamol
- NSAIDS and biologic DMARDS are used in the appropriate patients.
